During the 2021 summer holidays, the My Space Love Story Foundation also organized Forest Camps by the sea. Our goal was to encourage children to step away from screens and connect with nature, utilizing the forest as a natural athletic arena that fosters physical activity through direct contact with nature and clean air. The camps aimed to inspire kids to spend time outdoors, boost their motivation to stay active, care for their health, and combat issues like childhood obesity and postural defects. We wanted to highlight the physical and mental benefits of connecting with nature while broadening athletic opportunities for underrepresented youth. Beyond bringing joy and energy, the program emphasized how physical activity improves mental well-being, reduces anxiety, enhances sleep quality, builds self-confidence, and nurtures empathy, creativity, and social skills.
Across three sessions, 60 children from Municipal Social Welfare Centers (MOPS) in the Tri-City area participated in the program. The children spent their days outdoors—hiking through the forest, playing beach sports, and learning to dance. We also hosted interactive culinary workshops where participants learned to make sushi, all under the guidance of certified instructors and staff.
The project was also designed to counter the negative social and physical impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
We hope the children enjoyed themselves, gained valuable insights into the lifelong benefits of physical activity and mental wellness, and formed lasting friendships. We look forward to continuing this annual tradition.
